Insomnia (Sleep Problems)

Are you struggling for a good night’s sleep?
Do not worry ! You are not alone as millions and millions of people around the globe suffer from sleep problems.

Sleep is an integral part of every person’s life and is vital for a healthy body and mind. People can often become distressed when they feel that they are not getting a good night’s sleep. They may not be sleeping for long enough, have poor quality sleep, have difficulty falling asleep or waking up too early in the morning. People who suffer from insomnia often feel very restless during the night and do not wake up feeling refreshed. This affects their functioning during the day often leaving them feeling tired, irritable and lacking concentration.

It seriously impacts the quality of their work as well as relationships. It not only takes a toll on their energy levels and mood but also deteriorates their health and overall quality of life.

Insomnia can happen to people of all ages but are more common in people who are in mid to late stages of life. Women are more likely to develop sleep problems as compared to men. Different people require different amounts of sleep. Some people function well with just three or four hours of sleep a night but most people need seven or eight hours of sleep per night to feel refreshed during the day and function effectively.

There are many environmental, physiological and psychological factors that can contribute to the development of insomnia. Life stressors such as loss of job, financial difficulties, death or illness of a loved one, divorce or any traumatic experience can lead to sleep problems. Unhealthy lifestyles and poor sleep habits such as irregular bedtime schedules, stimulating activities before bedtime, uncomfortable sleep environment, watching TV or video games and eating late at night can interfere with a normal sleep cycle. Insomnia can also be caused due to various mental health issues like anxiety and depression or physical illnesses such as arthiritis, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal disorders or neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.
